Firewire Connections
FireWire allows users to connect storage devices and other peripherals to host computers, giving unparalleled flexibility in data capture, storage, transportation, and backup capabilities. FireWire allows devices to be hot swapped from one computer to another. Hot swapping allows FireWire storage devices (as well as other peripherals, such as video cameras) to be physically attached to a FireWire port, automatically mounted on the desktop, accessed, and then unmounted / disconnected at the command of the user.
The resulting ease of use has caused FireWire technology to be widely accepted by millions of users. FireWire is directly supported by a variety of operating systems, including Windows 98SE, ME, 2K, XP and Mac OS9.1, 9.2 and OSX. Linux also is capable of supporting FireWire, although the process of setting up first use on that platform may be a little more difficult.
Users have reported failures of FireWire ports on host computers after attaching FireWire devices to those ports. This can be quite unsettling to the user, since the failure of the FireWire port can be crippling to the utilization of the computer. For instance, it may become impossible to create backups or attach FireWire peripherals to the computer after failure of the port.
Redgum has received numerous reports of firewire breakdowns both in the computer and more particularly with digital video cameras costing some owners many thousands of dollars to repair. For video camera operators an immediate response is to make sure your computer and camera are turned off prior to connecting with each other. A hardware fix is available and details of that will follow shortly. Have you experience problems with a firewire device? Please let me know
Redgum - What is it?
RED GUM
(river red gum)
Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh
Red Gum has a close, fine textured, usually interlocked grain producing an attractive ripple or fiddleback figure. The timber colour is red to reddish brown.
Red Gum is one of the most common inland trees of Australia and is found along watercourses throughout all states except Tasmania. It is the tree most often identified with outback Australia. Red gum has been used in furniture and construction building since Australia was first settled during the 1700s.
The durability of Red Gum is evident in samples up to 5000 years old being discovered in the mud beds of the Murray River. The timber has turned darker in colour, but is otherwise not affected
